Heritage Presbyterian Church

Alexandria, VA - Opus 272, 1994

Built in the 1960's, Heritage Church was not designed for a pipe organ. The church has a modified Akron-plan sanctuary, with the pulpit at one corner and the choir loft in the opposite corner. The organ was given a tiny shelf for a set of speakers.

When the congregation had matured to the point that a pipe organ was the desire, conversations with many organ builders led them to despair of ever getting an organ, as all wanted them to change the room drastically, which would have been quite expensive.

Our solution was to recommend the installation of a support beam from one side of the corner to the other, which enabled the organ space to become large enough for a Swell box. Then the Great and Pedal could be mounted on small chests bracketed to the wall and partially supported by this new beam.

The result was just what was planned, as one member of the church put it, "It looks like the organ has always been there!" The facade pipes of flamed copper complement the colors of the brick used in the construction, and cover the horizontal shades of the Swell division. The pipes of the Great and Pedal are functionally displayed on each side, with the larger pipes at the rear and back, where the most support is available. While the blower and relay are in the attic over the vestibule, the rest of the organ is all within the room, and sounds forth to best effect right at one of the tonal focal points.
