Examples of pipe fatigue in the 32’ Bombarde; the zinc available to the trade was not strong, and the traditional “Trombone” miter is not a joint that will pass the weight/stress well.
The repaired 32’ Bombarde pipes; new “stems” were made of stronger zinc. These were cut and mitered into “box” joints, which in turn were soldered to new pieces of metal to pass the weight/stress.
Again new support pieces were added, and on one pipe a fin was soldered to the seam for additional support.
