Farmville Baptist Church
Washington, D.C. - Rebuilt by Lewis & Hitchcock, 2006
The Estey firm of Brattleboro, Vermont originally built the organ in the Farmville Baptist Church in 1913. In 1960 the church was renovated, and the pipes of that organ were used in a new instrument built by Lewis & Hitchcock, Inc. By the year 2000 the organ was in need of repair after forty years of use, and there was a desire for more tonal variety. We developed a plan that addressed these desires, and also went further. The choir was having difficulty hearing the organ well, so we made sure that stops existed on each manual and pedal that would aid in accompanying the choir, as well as soloists. The specification was rounded out, adding stops of softer and louder tonality, as well as deeper and higher, so that the organist could select the right sound for the music. Then we rebuilt the console with a multiplex operating system, and a 32-level combination action. Now all the various combinations could be easily recalled, and the addition of a Transposer made the organ even more flexible. Dr. B. McRae Amoss is the organist, and Pamela McDermott is the Director of Music.
