Christ Ascension Episcopal Church
Richmond, VA - Organ rebuilt by Lewis & Hitchcock, 2010
This is the interior of the church. The organ is in the center area behind grillecloth. The console is on the left side of the choir.
The organ is a 1978 Schantz that had a rather unusual stop layout. The couplers for the Great and Positiv divisions were separated from the stops.
Ed Schutt is the Organist/Choirmaster; his desire was to make the organ be as flexible as possible using the existing resources, plus adding some Walker digital voices to fill out the Pedal and to provide a Festival Trumpet and Zimbalstern.
In the factory the console was gutted and placed on its back, so that the new master control panel could be mounted.
The keyboards were redone with additional pistons.
The console is nearly complete in the factory.
The rebuilt console installed and in regular use. The organ has proved to be very versatile and certainly can provide the right sound for the music.
